My first post!!!

Hello all and thanks for looking in.

Our reason for starting this blog is to create a forum that allows us all to share our collective knowledge and unique experiences in coping with the manifestations of this devastating disease. We have all been affected by Alzheimer's through loved ones, friends and their families. Sharing what we have observed and learned can help in supporting, understanding and perhaps even avoiding some of the consequences of the various stages of this disease.

The goal here is to create a community of health care professionals, patients and their families that are willing to participate and communicate with each other. We believe that "a friend in need, is a friend indeed" and we will make every effort to post valuable and accurate information.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you all the best.

I read your blog introduction and I was encouraged by the potential of IVIG in the treatment Alzheimer's. My father has recently been diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. Does IVIG have the same positive outcomes with the treatment of Vascular Dementia? BAM

Vascular dementia has a different etiology than dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. Vascular dementia is a result of small strokes secondary to cerebrovascular disease. This occurs over many years and presents itself clinically as a form of dementia. Alzheimer's disease appears to be caused by the accumulation of the beta amyloid protein as plaques in the brain. Since IVIG is a blood by product it contains antibodies that attach to the beta amyloid protein and appear to prevent the beta amyloid from accumulating in the brain in the form of plaques. IVIG does not appear to have any place in the treatment of vascular dementia. Risk factors for vascular dementia include a history of high blood pressure or diabetes mellitus.

I have started IVIG home Rx for my spouse at 0.4 g per Kg with infusions once a month. Is there any evidence that more frequent infusions are more effective? Would appreciate aany info regarding dosage and frequency.

After reviewing the most recent data from the International Alzheimer's meeting, it would appear that the correct dosing is 0.4gms/kg every two weeks (twice a month).
